A spacer sets the gap in an assembly, and a missing or crushed one shows up as a wheel, roller or pulley sitting out of line. If the old piece came out flattened or split during a rebuild, replace it instead of reusing it — a few thousandths of stack-up error is enough to walk a belt off its track.
