The brushroll is the agitator that beats carpet pile open so airflow can carry the soil out of it. When the bristles wear down close to flush with the core, the vacuum still sounds completely normal but stops lifting embedded grit, and a test strip of carpet will show the difference within a single pass. Wooden cores hold their line under belt tension where a thin hollow core can bow over time.
