This is the air valve assembly from the Sharp EC-TU2807, part FVLVA016VBK0. It works as a bleed in the airway: open it and air enters ahead of the nozzle so suction eases off for curtains, rugs and other light work; close it and the machine sends its full pull to the floor.

It fails in one of two ways. It cracks, in which case air leaks in whether you want it to or not and the vacuum never reaches full suction; or it sticks, and the control does nothing at all. Either one shows up as a machine cleaning weakly on carpet for no reason a bag or filter change explains.

Check the model plate on your Sharp before ordering. Replacement is a matter of releasing the old valve body and seating the new one in its place.
