The Bissell 7700 Big Green canister cleaner takes this foam pre-motor filter, part 2037082, in the airflow path just ahead of the motor. It is the last thing standing between fine dust and the motor bearings.
Foam ages badly inside a vacuum. It stiffens, then crumbles at the edges, and a piece that has gone brittle can collapse under suction and choke the airflow rather than pass it. The pattern owners describe is a machine that pulls hard for a minute and then fades, a motor note climbing as it goes, and real heat coming off the exhaust.
The foam can be rinsed in cool water between changes provided it goes back completely dry, because damp foam costs more airflow than dirty foam does. Once the surface stops springing back or the edges start shedding, no amount of washing will save it.
