This plate forms the floor of the nozzle housing on Sanitaire 16 in. Wide Track commercial uprights, stocked as part 20-7204-05. Its shape is what sets how close the brush roll rides to the carpet, so once it warps or cracks, the machine cleans differently than it did new.
Commercial uprights see years of daily use, and a bottom plate takes impacts against baseboards, curbs and doorway thresholds that a residential machine never sees. Once that happens, clearance drifts out of spec and cleaning performance on carpet drops along with it.

A worn plate is worth replacing on its own rather than waiting for a full nozzle housing to fail, since the plate is the wear item and the housing above it typically is not. On a machine that has started running unevenly or dragging on one side, inspect the plate for warping before assuming the belt or brush roll itself is at fault, since a distorted plate throws off clearance even when the roller underneath it is still in good condition.
