Part 10-3403-05 is the brush roll for Dyson DC15 upright vacuums built with the gray brushbar. Dyson sold the DC15 with more than one roller design, so this part is made specifically for the gray-roller version and will not correctly fit the other variant.
Check the roller currently in the machine before ordering: its color is the deciding detail here, not the DC15 model number on its own, since both roller styles shipped under that same name.
The bristles on this roll pull embedded dirt out of carpet fibers and carry it into the path of the machine's own airflow. As they wear, the vacuum keeps making the same suction noise while doing less of that work, so a tired roller is easy to miss without a side-by-side comparison against a fresh one.
A wrap of hair or thread around the roller core has a similar effect to worn bristles even when the bristles themselves are still in good shape, and it adds drag the drive belt has to work against. Clearing that wrap out is worth doing whenever the roller comes out, not only when the bristles are already due for replacement.
