The roll is the one part inside a canister nozzle that actually touches carpet pile, and it wears the way any bristled roller does: the tufts flatten and shorten with use, and a machine that used to leave visible cleaning lines starts leaving matted pile behind instead. Hair and thread wrapped around the shaft produce the same flat, ineffective pass, so clear the roller of debris before deciding the bristles themselves are worn.
