A brush roller only leaves an AUTOMATIC X8 power head when the release at each end turns and lets go cleanly. Part 52224DB is the left-hand release knob, moulded in dark blue to match the machine, and on a household that vacuums up long hair it is the component that gets worked hardest, because the roller comes out every few weeks to be cut clear.

Two failures account for most replacements. The splines inside the knob round off, so it spins freely and never moves the lock; or the moulding cracks around its boss, so it still turns but no longer holds the roller down in its seat once everything is back together. The first leaves a roller that cannot be removed, the second a roller with play in it that throws belts and scores the housing. SEBO records this knob at position 133 of the AUTOMATIC X7 / X8 exploded diagram, described there as the left-hand brush roller release knob in dark blue. The mirrored right-hand side of the same assembly is covered by release ring 52033ER at position 129, and the left-hand ring that works underneath this knob is 52248ER — with the sole plate already off, both are worth a look.

Confirm the side before ordering. This is the left-hand knob and it fits the SEBO AUTOMATIC X8.

With the new knob on, turn it to the locked position by hand and check that the roller cannot be lifted at that end before the machine is set back down. A knob that feels tight without having engaged its splines will hold for a room or two and then let go, which reads as a new part failing when in truth it was never seated.
