The bumper runs around the leading edge of the machine and absorbs contact so the housing does not. It is a consumable by design, which is why SEBO lists it on its own rather than only as part of a body assembly. Bumpers go hard with age, split at the corners where the contact loads concentrate, or work loose from their mounting until a length of it hangs off the edge of the housing. At that point it is doing neither job: furniture starts picking up marks, and the housing itself begins to scuff and chip where the bumper used to sit proud.
