Product details
Part 8505967-50 is a pair of carbon brushes sized for the Ametek Lamb 122176-18 motor, and the same brushes also fit the 122167-00. Inside the motor, each brush is a small carbon block held against the commutator by a spring, carrying current to the spinning armature as the motor runs.
Brushes shorten with every hour the motor turns, and as they wear, contact with the commutator gets erratic before it fails. Watch for sparking visible through the motor vents, a motor that hesitates or stumbles when it should be running steady, and a hot electrical smell building up during use. Left in place too long, a worn brush lets its holder score the commutator surface, which turns a brush job into a motor job.
Fit both brushes as a pair, never just the one that looks worse, and glance over the exposed commutator once the housing is off. Read the motor's own number off its housing and match it against the two numbers listed here before you buy, since two motors can look identical externally and still take different brushes. It also pays to flex the spring on the old brushes by hand; a spring that has lost its tension lets the carbon chatter against the copper and can spark long before the brush material itself has actually run out.
