Product details
This carbon brush set, part 8505936-50, is the replacement brush kit Ametek lists for its Lamb 5.7 inch Advantek thru-flow motors: 119997-00, 119997-41, 122147-08, 122264-00, 122288-00, 122392-00 and 122683-07. All of them are 120 volt, two-stage units, which is why a single kit covers the group. It comes as a matched pair, since brushes should always be changed together rather than swapped one at a time.
The brushes are the wear point inside the motor, two spring-loaded carbon blocks that keep current flowing to the spinning commutator as it turns. As they wear down, contact gets rough before it fails outright, and you will typically notice sparking through the housing vents, a motor that loses power under load or hesitates on start-up, and a burnt smell after extended use.
Open the motor housing and match the number stamped on the frame against the list above before ordering. Two entries there are worth knowing about: Ametek marks 122147-08 obsolete, and 119997-00 has been superseded by 119997-41, so a power unit built years ago can carry a motor number that no longer appears in current catalogues even though the brush set is unchanged.
Replace both brushes together and inspect the commutator surface while the housing is open. A brush that has worn down to the spring can leave a groove in the commutator, and fitting a fresh brush against a scored surface just wears the new one down faster than it should.
