Sparking at the motor, a machine that cuts out and restarts, or power that has quietly dropped off over a season of use — on the Duo these all point at the same wear item. Part 05084S is the Brush M carbon set for the pulley-driven 3049ER motor, and the capacitor is included in the set rather than ordered separately.
Carbon is sacrificial by design. The blocks are held against the spinning commutator by spring pressure and shorten a little every hour the motor turns, until the spring behind them can no longer maintain firm contact. Left past that point the arcing begins to pit the copper segments of the commutator itself, which is the step that turns a modest parts order into a motor replacement. The capacitor supplied alongside them suppresses the electrical noise that brush gear generates, and renewing it with the brushes means the whole contact assembly goes back in a known condition. Fitting new carbons alongside an aged capacitor leaves half the job done and the same components disturbed again later.
Two details are worth getting right at the bench. Change both blocks together so they bed in evenly against the commutator, and check the motor identification before ordering: this set is matched to the 3049ER motor with the pulley, so a Duo that has had a motor changed at some point in its life may not take it. Fits the SEBO Duo. It is worth measuring the remaining length of the old blocks before discarding them, since a set that has worn evenly and stopped short of the commutator tells a different story from one that has worn at an angle, which usually points at a bearing or an alignment issue behind the brush gear.
