Part 1626412 is that tank, also listed for the 2987, and it is the reservoir that meters water and cleaning solution down to the nozzle as the machine works.
Tanks tend to fail suddenly rather than wear out gradually. A hairline crack forms along a molded seam, the sealing lip warps just enough to stop making full contact, or the gasket goes hard and stops flexing, and any of the three lets solution escape while the trigger spray weakens at the exact same moment.
