Central vacuum hoses with a gas-pump style grip, the kind where the handle swivels independently of the hose, carry a switch and receptacle assembly inside the grip. Part 170152 is the repair kit for that assembly on Plastiflex-built hoses, including the Beam 5772.
The switch is what a thumb presses hundreds of times a week and the receptacle is where the power nozzle plugs in, so both wear from use rather than age. The symptoms show up at the handle: the nozzle will not start from the grip switch, it flickers when the handle is twisted, or the switch feels mushy and no longer clicks. Replacing the assembly is the normal repair, since the hose itself is usually still sound.
Work with the hose disconnected, split the grip, and transfer the wiring one lead at a time, noting where each sits before it comes off.
