Part R12096B is the cooling air filter for the Rexair Model E, also carried under the number R7287. It sits in the stream of air the motor draws across itself for cooling, catching dust before it can reach the windings.
This is the filter people forget, because a clogged one changes nothing you can hear. What it does is choke the motor cooling airflow, so the machine runs hotter than it was designed to and the motor life shortens quietly. Running the vacuum with the filter left out is worse still: the cooling air goes in unfiltered and dust settles inside the motor itself.
Seat the replacement fully in its holder so no air slips past the edge, and look at it whenever you have the machine open. Once it has gone gray and matted rather than merely dusty, change it.
