Part 304021001 is the F52 filter for the Dirt Devil BD20050 hand vacuum, shaped to sit in that machine's dirt cup. It is the piece standing between the debris the cup collects and the air the motor pulls through behind it.

On a small hand vacuum, the filter is working with far less media area than the filtration stack of a full-size upright, so it loads quickly and shows the effect just as quickly. A filter that loses its open structure lets fine dust straight through toward the motor instead of holding it in the cup.

The wear pattern is straightforward on a unit this size: crumbs and debris start resting on top of the filter instead of being pulled past it, the exhaust carries a faint dusty smell that was not there when the filter was fresh, or suction feels noticeably weaker even right after emptying the dirt cup.
