Part 440002717 is the replacement cord reel assembly for the Dirt Devil SD40030. The reel winds the power cord into the machine and pays it back out on demand, so the cord stores itself instead of trailing loose.
Cord reels fail in two familiar ways. The retraction spring loses its pull, so the cord creeps back in slowly or stops a few feet short and hangs out of the machine. Or the reel binds, and the cord jams going in either direction. Both leave you wrapping a cord by hand around a vacuum that was designed to do it for itself — and a permanently trailing cord is a tripping hazard besides.
The new reel installs in place of the original assembly; disconnect power before opening the machine, and keep the cord free of kinks afterward so it winds evenly. Confirm your Dirt Devil is the SD40030 before ordering.
