Dirt indicator for the Hoover Power Drive and Dial-A-Matic uprights, part 161469KY. It reads the air moving through the machine and shows you when debris is still coming up off the carpet, which was the original way of telling whether an area needed another pass.
The indicator itself rarely wears out; it gets broken or clouded. A cracked lens, a window discoloured to the point where you cannot read it, or an indicator that has stuck, all leave you working blind. On these machines that reading doubles as an airflow gauge, so an indicator sitting low with a clean bag fitted is telling you something further along is blocked.
Check the number against your machine before ordering. Hoover fitted several indicator styles across the Power Drive and Dial-A-Matic range and they are not interchangeable.
