Its job is to take the contact that would otherwise land on the moulded rim of the bag compartment. Years of skirting boards, table legs and stair nosings leave it grey along its length, then cracked at a fixing, then loose. Once it is no longer held tight it has stopped absorbing anything, and the rim behind it begins to chip. A new strip resets both halves of the problem at once, the protection and the appearance, and on a white machine the difference is obvious from across the room.
