Backpack machines are unforgiving about bag condition because the whole air path runs across your back. When the bag loads up you feel the motor working before you see any drop in pickup, and on a cordless unit runtime falls with it, since a restricted machine draws more current for less work. The usual advice holds: change the bag at around two-thirds full rather than waiting for it to pack solid at the inlet.
Fitting the correct bag matters as much as changing it often. A bag that does not seat properly on the inlet collar lets unfiltered air past the seal, which puts fine dust straight through the motor. Five bags to a pack keeps a spare in the machine and a few more on the shelf.
