This is the dust compartment for the Bernina 6100, in black, Evolution part 01-7809-64, the chamber that collects everything the machine picks up.
It has to be airtight to work, and that is exactly what a crack takes away. A split along a seam lets air in where it should not be, so the suction reaching the floor head drops even though the motor and the filters are fine, and packed debris starts working its way back out of the crack while you clean. Fine dust settling on the outside of the machine is usually the first sign.
A sound compartment brings the seal back. Check the latch and the sealing face when you fit it, because the chamber needs to close tight and a new compartment on a tired latch will not.
