One white felt strip, sold singly as 5108, does the unglamorous job of taking up the gap where two moulded surfaces come together inside the machine. Felt gives a soft, compressible face so the joint closes without hard plastic meeting hard plastic.

Age, heat and repeated compression flatten felt until it no longer fills that gap. What you notice is a joint that whistles under load, a rattle that was not there before, or fine dust finding its way past a seam and settling where it has no business being. None of that is dramatic on the day it starts, but a machine that is losing air at an internal joint is doing less work at the floor for the same power draw.
