Part 2038427 is the washable post-motor filter for the Bissell Zing bagged canister, series 4122. It sits after the motor and filters air on its way out of the machine, which makes it the part responsible for how the exhaust smells.

Post-motor filters are easy to forget because they barely affect suction. The tell is in the air instead: a musty smell when the vacuum runs, or a faint haze of fine dust caught in a sunbeam near the exhaust vent, means the filter is loaded or has been put back damp. Carbon fines from motor brush wear collect here too.

Being washable, it can be rinsed and then left to dry completely before it goes back in; never refit it damp. It fits the Zing bagged canister vacuum 4122.
