This black clamp is the piece that locks the height-adjust setting on a Riccar full-size power nozzle (FSPN) once the operator has picked a pile depth. Height-adjust mechanisms on nozzles like this one typically rely on a clamp squeezing onto a fixed post, so the setting is only as solid as the clamp's grip.

Once a clamp wears down or cracks, the setting drifts under load: the nozzle digs into deep pile and starts to bog down, or it rides too high and skates across the carpet surface without ever agitating it. Replacing the clamp is what gives the adjuster its grip back, and it is a small, inexpensive part to check before assuming a bigger assembly has failed.
