Toothed belts of this kind stay perfectly reliable, right up to the point they are not. Wear tends to happen at the teeth themselves, gradually rounding off or occasionally shearing outright when the roller jams against hair or a stray thread caught in carpet fiber, and once enough teeth are compromised the belt begins skipping under load rather than driving cleanly. From there it usually goes from intermittent drive to none at all within a short window of continued use.
