It carries dirt from the wand back to the dust collector, so a fault anywhere along it shows up as lost suction at the tool while the motor still sounds strong. Pinholes whistle. Splits at the cuff let air in where the hose bends hardest. A clog somewhere in the middle kills airflow altogether and usually announces itself with a change in motor pitch.
