This is the OEM fork back cover plate for Kirby's Tradition 3CB, molded in the Tradition blue that matches the machine, part 174579. It shields the back side of the pivot where the handle hinges and swivels at the base of the machine, the point that absorbs the full push-pull load every time the vacuum is used.
Kirby uprights from this era are famous for running for decades, and small trim pieces like this cover are usually the first thing to betray that age, not from structural wear but because repeated flexing at the pivot eventually cracks the cover or leaves it brittle. Once the cover goes missing or splits, the hardware underneath sits exposed to dust and grit, and an otherwise solid machine starts to look tired. Grit that gets behind a missing cover also works into the pivot every time the handle moves, wear the machine would never see with the plate in place.
Replacing the cover restores both the look of the machine and a bit of protection for the hardware it sits over. Fitting is a simple swap into the position the old cover occupied; note how the old plate sits before removing it so the new one goes back the same way.
