Spot removers work best used quickly, before a spill has time to set into the carpet backing. Spray the affected area, then blot with a clean cloth working from the outer edge of the spot toward the center rather than rubbing, since rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the pile and spreads it wider than it started. Blotting lifts the stain up into the cloth instead of grinding it further down.
Test the spray on a hidden corner first if you have not used it on that carpet before, since dyes and fiber types react differently to any cleaning product.
