Product details
Kirby part 178612 is the handle boot for the Sentria II. It is the flexible collar at the handle pivot that cushions the joint, hides the hardware and keeps grit from working its way into the moving parts.
Boots crack from the inside out. The rubber stiffens with age and heat, a split opens at the fold, and the boot either gapes or falls away entirely. From that point the pivot is open to dust, the handle develops a bit of side-to-side slop, and the wear rate on the surrounding hardware climbs.
Replacing it is one of the easier jobs on the machine: the new boot presses onto the pivot and seats without tools. While the old one is off, look at the pivot hardware underneath, because a boot that has been split for a long time often means there is dirt in the joint that wants cleaning out before the new boot goes on.
