Product details
Kirby machines run at a noticeably lower volume than a bare vacuum motor, and the reason is a muffler in the exhaust path that absorbs sound before air leaves the machine. Part 189218S is that muffler, sized for Kirby's Avalir Platinum upright.
It rarely causes an outright failure, so owners tend to overlook it. A muffler loads up with fine dust year after year and the machine gets steadily louder, without one obvious moment where something broke. A torn or crushed muffler skips that slow decline and jumps straight to a loud machine, typically the result of rough handling rather than gradual wear.
Because it is easy to reach only when the machine is already opened up, it is worth checking whenever something else brings you inside. A noise complaint that never got traced back to the muffler tends to return as soon as everything is closed again, and by then the job has to be repeated from the start.
Handle the replacement gently rather than gripping it hard enough to deform it, and seat it fully before closing the machine back up. One left slightly off its seat can rattle even though it is otherwise undamaged, which is easy to mistake for the original complaint returning. Compare the old and new parts side by side before fitting so you know the replacement matches what came out.
