The power cord on an Oreck XL or U-series upright passes through a molded protector where it meets the machine, and that small piece is what keeps years of bending from ever reaching the wires inside the cord itself. Part 03-00600-01 replaces that fitting.
Reclining the machine to vacuum and standing it back upright flexes the cord at that point on every single pass. Enough cycles eventually split the fitting or knock it loose, and once that happens the cord itself absorbs the sharp bend directly. The earliest symptom tends to be power that comes and goes depending on how the cord happens to sit. Wait past that point and the last symptom is bare copper showing at the bend, which is not something to keep running.
Installing the replacement is basic hand-tool work: free the old fitting, seat the new one in its place, and reassemble, following your model's parts diagram for the exact teardown. While things are apart, check the cord itself for nicks near the old fitting, since a damaged protector often means the cord underneath took some of that bending too.
