A nozzle belt has a rougher job than one on an upright, since the roller it turns is the part actually plowing through deep pile and picking up hair. As the belt loses tension, the roller runs slower and slower until the nozzle stops agitating the carpet in any meaningful way, even though the canister keeps pulling suction through the hose the whole time. That combination is why the fault can hide for a while: the carpet looks vacuumed at a glance but still releases dirt on a second, slower pass. A belt that has actually broken is more obvious, leaving the roller dead still while the nozzle motor keeps turning.
