F962 is the pre-motor filter assembly from the Dyson DC41 upright, and the same assembly serves the DC65, DC66, UP13, UP20 and UP30.
It sits between the cyclone pack and the motor, catching the fine dust the cyclones do not throw into the bin. When it packs solid the machine cannot breathe: it runs hot, suction fades mid-clean, and on a badly clogged one the thermal cutout trips and the vacuum stops until it has cooled down. Owners often go hunting for a blockage in the hose when the filter is the actual cause.
The assembly lifts out of its cavity and the replacement drops in, no tools required. Check the model on the back of your machine before ordering, since Dyson changed pre-filter shapes between generations.
