Retaining rings get no thought at all until one lets go and the part it was holding starts to move. The ring in question is 8058ER, used on the D1 Turbo and the D4 Premium AIRBELT canisters and drawn as item 16 on SEBO's AIRBELT D sheet.
Its neighbours give away where it belongs. Item 15 on that sheet is the circuit board, 17 the overprinted power display, 18 the power button spring and 19 the knob, which puts the ring in the middle of the control group. SEBO also supplies the same ring inside part 8038ER2, the power display, and that packaging is a firm pointer to what it clamps down.
Mechanically a ring of this type holds its component hard against a seat and stops any axial creep. Prise one off and refit it a few times and it loses temper: it will not bite in the groove any more, and the piece it retained develops play, starts clicking under the thumb, or comes away entirely when the housing is next opened. Because the symptom is movement rather than breakage, the ring is easy to overlook when a control has gone loose - the knob and the switch get suspected long before the thing holding them together.
