Part H523 is the retaining ring for the Rexair Rainbow D3, a sprung ring that seats in a groove and stops the component it captures from walking out of position.
Retaining rings are single-use in practice. Spreading one to get it off takes some of the spring out of it, and a reused ring sits loose in its groove. Once that happens, the part it holds starts to move under load: a new noise, a bit of play that was not there before, and eventually an assembly that comes apart at the worst possible moment. It is small enough and cheap enough that fitting a new one during any teardown is simply good practice.
Use ring pliers to seat it, and expect to feel it snap into the groove rather than sit on the shoulder. Compare it against the original for size, and confirm your Rainbow is a D3.
