Part B480-4314 is the left-side motor cover seal, in black, for MV-platform Tandem Air uprights built by Riccar and Simplicity. It closes the gap along the edge where the motor cover meets the body, and a seal doing its job is part of keeping suction moving to the nozzle instead of leaking in through the seam.

Foam and rubber seals compress and go brittle with age and with heat from the motor, and a seal that has torn or flattened is easy to miss because the machine still runs. The usual sign is suction that has faded gradually rather than dropped all at once, on a machine with a clear filter and a bag or canister that is not full.

The right-side seal is a separate part, so check whether your cover needs one seal or both before ordering. Once installed, foam and rubber seals take a permanent set, so putting the old piece back in after removal rarely solves anything even if it still looks fine to the eye.
