Push a control button on a Royal upright enough times over enough years and the stem eventually snaps off flush with the housing, leaving the switch mechanism underneath intact but nothing to actually press. Part 1460040000 is the extension piece that fixes exactly that, restoring a normal grip point without requiring any work on the switch itself.
Without the extension in place, engaging the switch means digging into a shallow recess with a screwdriver tip or a fingernail, which works in a pinch but is not how the control was meant to function day to day. The extension restores the button to its designed height, so a normal fingertip press engages the switch cleanly again.
The stem takes the full force of every press, concentrated where it meets the switch beneath, which is why the break almost always happens there rather than in the switch housing itself. An extension that is not an exact match can look correct sitting in the packaging but end up noticeably proud or recessed once it is actually installed, so test-fit it before committing to a full reassembly if there is any uncertainty about your machine's exact variant.
