The motor protection filter sits ahead of the windings and bearings and holds back what the bag let by, which is real work on every single run, since motors are far more often killed by ingested dust than by honest wear.
Part 7012ER is the same filter previously supplied as 7012AM and goes straight in as its replacement, so an older manual or an old invoice quoting the AM number is pointing at this item. Neglect shows up in two different ways depending on how far it has gone. A merely dirty element restricts airflow, so suction falls away even with a fresh bag fitted and the motor runs hotter for the same job.
