Returns & Exchanges

A wye brings a branch into a trunk line at a shallow angle instead of a square one, so material entering the main pipe merges with the flow rather than meeting it head on. Part 509S is the steel 45-degree wye for that junction on a metal run.

Choosing between a wye and a tee is mostly a question of room. The angled body of a wye needs more linear space than a tee does, and where the layout gives it that space the wye is the kinder geometry of the two. MD publishes this one as zinc-plated galvanized carbon steel in 18 gauge, fabricated to ASTM standards and sold on its own.

Sketching the branch point before ordering is worth the few minutes, because the longer angled body wants more depth inside a joist bay or a stud cavity than a square junction of the same nominal size.
