Without it, the cord finds its own path, which usually means underfoot, catching on doorframes, or dragging across whatever the operator is trying to clean at the time. A dangling cord is also how cords get damaged, snagging on a cart wheel or a table leg with enough force to strain the connection at either end of the run, and a cord that has been yanked hard enough eventually shows it at the plug or at the strain relief where it enters the machine.
