That wide flat mouth is built to press flat against a surface that flexes. A carpet nozzle is built for a floor pushing back at it, and set on a cushion it digs in and closes off the airpath, while this one stays flush across a sofa seat, a chair back, a mattress panel or a car seat and keeps a path open for the suction behind it.
It seats on the wand or directly on the hose handle in place of the original tool, with no adaptor needed. Carrying one along keeps the carpet nozzle away from pet hair loads it was never built to handle. Fine pet hair works its way into the base of a carpet nozzle and stays there, while a flat upholstery mouth lets it pass straight through to the bag.
The mouth edge wears first, since it drags across fabric and seams more than any other tool in the set. Once that edge has gone soft or split it stops sitting flush, and the tool starts leaving lint behind instead of lifting it. Light, even strokes lift more than heavy pressure does, because the tool works by moving air across fabric rather than by force pushed into it. Overlapping strokes in one direction lift matted hair from a cushion better than scrubbing back and forth, which mostly drives it deeper into the weave. On a mattress or a tufted panel, working along the seams first and then across the flat panels gets more out in fewer passes than starting in the middle.
