Wood-core brush rolls are the original design Hoover used across its Convertible upright line, a wooden dowel with bristle strips set into it rather than the plastic-core rolls that came later. This is a direct replacement built to that same wood-core spec, part H801, sized to fit the Convertible bodies these older Hoover uprights share.
A brush roll does the actual carpet agitation on an upright, spinning to lift pile and drive embedded dirt up where the airflow can carry it away. Bristles wear down gradually with normal use, but the more common failure on a wood-core roll is uneven wear from a belt that has been running loose or slipping, which grinds one section of bristles flatter than the rest and leaves visible streaks in carpet after a pass.
A worn roll does not always look dramatic before pickup starts to suffer. Run a thumb across the bristle rows; if one side feels noticeably shorter than the other, or the roll no longer spins freely by hand with the belt off, it has already reached the point where carpet cleaning performance is declining.
Because this is the older wood-core design rather than a later plastic-core roll, confirm your machine takes this style before ordering. If the roll currently in the machine has a solid wood dowel visible through the bristle rows, this is the correct replacement; a hollow plastic core means a different part is needed.
