Three things end a display's life. A knock cracks the lens; long exposure to daylight bleaches the printing until the symbols become guesswork; or the panel goes dark and stops reporting anything at all. A cracked lens is more than cosmetic as well, since fine dust travels through the split into the recess sitting behind the panel.
