Part 173899S is the black cord hook fitted to the Kirby Generation 6. It is also listed for the Tradition 3CB, the Heritage II and the Heritage II Legend.
Cord hooks live a hard life for a part with no moving components. Every time the cord is stripped off in one motion rather than unwound, the hook takes the whole load at its base, and eventually it cracks there and breaks away. From that point the cord will not stay wrapped: it unwinds in the closet, trails while you vacuum, and gets caught under the machine.
Replacing it costs very little and protects the cord, which is the part you genuinely cannot do without. Check your machine against the models above before ordering, because Kirby used several similar hooks across this era and they do not interchange.
