It clamps onto the adjustment axle and provides the leverage to rotate it through the carpet height range, so every setting the machine offers is delivered through this one small moulding.
Height selection on an upright is not a convenience feature. Set too low into a deep pile and the head ploughs while the motor labours; set too high on a short commercial loop and the brush never reaches the fibre, so the machine glides over soil it should be lifting. The lever is the linkage that makes each of those positions repeatable rather than approximate.
Moulded levers fail at the joint first. Once the moulding cracks or the clamp loses its bite, the lever can be swung through its full travel while the axle stays exactly where it was, which reads on the machine as a height setting that simply will not change. The early stage is subtler: the setting holds for a pass or two, then creeps back under load.
