Part R146 is the bearing shield at the separator end of the motor on a Rainbow D2. A water-filtration vacuum is a damp environment by design, and this shield is what stands between the mist coming off the separator and the motor bearing behind it.
Bearings do not tolerate water. Once the shield is cracked, distorted or missing, moisture reaches the bearing and works on the grease and the races: the machine develops a dry rumble that rises with speed, then a growl, and eventually the bearing seizes and takes the armature with it. The noise is the warning, and it is worth acting on early.
Fit a new shield any time the motor is open. It is a small part protecting the most expensive one in the machine.
