Owners of the earlier AUTOMATIC X1 and X2 need the light gray cap, part 5160HG, rather than one of the darker later mouldings. It clips over the power switch and presents a flat, easy-to-find surface for turning the machine on and off.
Age is the usual enemy on these: the plastic goes brittle, the retaining tabs give way, and the cap disappears somewhere in a stairwell. Left uncovered, the switch collects fine dust that eventually makes its contacts unreliable, and an intermittent switch is a much larger repair than a cap. There is no trick to fitting one — unplug the machine, line the cap up over the rocker and press until the tabs take hold. Original caps on these two models have a good many years behind them now, so brittleness is the rule rather than the exception and a spare is rarely wasted.
