Stair treads are hard to clean with a standard floor nozzle because the curved edge of each tread needs the same spray-and-extract action as the flat part, and a stair tool is shaped to reach both. Once the tool's body cracks or its throat clogs, air leaks into the path and the tool wets a stain without pulling it back out.
Because the tool sprays cleaning solution as well as extracting it, a weak or absent spray pattern is usually a clogged nozzle rather than a machine problem; running warm water through the tool between jobs keeps the spray path clear far more reliably than trying to clear it after buildup has already hardened.
