What that combination buys is an upright that adapts to whatever is underfoot in a house that mixes surfaces. On carpet the brush roll stays driven and lifts the pile so the airflow can pull embedded grit up out of it. One press of the brush-mode button stops the roller before you cross hardwood, laminate or a flatweave rug, where a spinning brush does nothing useful and can scatter what it meets. The headlight is not decoration on a machine this size either: pushed under a coffee table or run along a baseboard, it shows the hair and lint that an overhead light hides completely.

Collected dirt goes into a disposable bag, so the fine material lifted out of a carpet is sealed in and thrown away sealed.
