Step on this foot paddle and a Bissell upright like the 12B1 unlocks its handle, letting the body drop back into its cleaning positions. Part 2038075 is the replacement.
Molded plastic taking a foot's worth of angled pressure on every use is exactly the kind of load that cracks a pivot over time. Once it goes, the handle either refuses to release at all, or it releases but will not catch again in the upright position, tipping forward on its own the instant your hand comes off it, which rules out leaning the machine against a wall between rooms. The paddle also doubles as the visual and physical stop that confirms the handle has locked, so a worn one can leave the machine feeling loose in the handle before the paddle actually gives out.
It fits the Bissell 12B1, 1240 and 68C7. While the old paddle is out, take a look at the pivot post it rides on, since a worn post can leave a brand-new paddle feeling just as loose as the old one.
Test the fit before finishing the job by cycling the handle through a full release and lock a few times. A paddle that catches cleanly every time on the bench is a good sign, but one that occasionally needs a second press even when new usually means the post underneath needs attention as well, and it is far easier to address that during the same repair than to open the machine back up a second time.
